Lupus Healing: Living with A Chronic Illness

Living with a chronic illness is a battle on multiple fronts. If you’re reading this, you might be all too familiar with the fatigue, pain, and emotional turmoil that come with conditions like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, and others. You’re probably trying your hardest to manage your symptoms—researching tirelessly, adhering to medical advice, and following treatment plans to the letter.

Yet, despite your best efforts, you may feel like you’re getting worse instead of better. This can lead to feelings of frustration, hopelessness, and despair. I understand because I’ve been there too.

The Struggle of Living with Chronic Illness

When living with a chronic illness, it's not uncommon to feel trapped in a cycle of suffering. You might have days where just getting out of bed feels like an insurmountable challenge. Emotional struggles, including anxiety, depression, and the constant worry about your future, often compound the physical pain.

You might feel like your illness defines you, overshadowing every aspect of your life. Despite all your efforts, it can seem like nothing is working, and the light at the end of the tunnel remains out of reach.

The Power of Perspective

What if the key to unlocking better health lies in what you do and how you think about your illness? Research has increasingly shown that our mindset and beliefs play a significant role in physical health. A study published in the Journal of Psychosomatic Research found that patients with a positive outlook and strong belief in their ability to influence their health outcomes had better physical health and lower pain and fatigue levels than those with a more negative outlook.

Our beliefs shape our reality. If you believe that you are powerless against your illness, that it will inevitably worsen, and that there is no hope for improvement, these beliefs can become self-fulfilling prophecies. On the other hand, adopting a mindset that embraces possibility, hope, and resilience can create a powerful shift in your health journey.

Tips for Changing Your Perspective

Challenge Negative Beliefs:

Start by identifying the negative beliefs you hold about your illness. Write them down and challenge their validity. Are these beliefs based on facts, or are they assumptions? Replace them with more empowering thoughts.

Practice Gratitude:

Focus on what you can do and the positive aspects of your life. Keeping a gratitude journal can help shift your focus from what's wrong to what's right.

Visualize Health:

Spend a few minutes each day visualizing yourself as healthy and vibrant. Imagine and visualize what it feels like to live without pain and fatigue.

Affirmations:

Use positive affirmations to reinforce your new beliefs. Statements like "I am healing," "I am strong," and "I am in control of my health" can powerfully impact your mindset.

Seek Support:

Surround yourself with positive influences. Join support groups focused on healing, whether in person or online, where you can share experiences and find encouragement.

Personal Journeys and Mindsets

It's essential to recognize that healing is a deeply personal journey. Not everyone will experience the same outcomes, but there are patterns worth noting. Some people find a path to better health through a combination of medical treatment, lifestyle changes, and a shift in their mindset. Research suggests that those who heal often have a strong sense of purpose, a supportive community, and a proactive approach to their health.

A Personal Journey of Healing

I have lived this truth. Diagnosed with lupus, a disease for which modern medicine has yet to find a cure, I was told that my future was bleak. Yet, I refused to accept this prognosis. Through a combination of optimized nutrition, lifestyle changes, and a radical shift in how I thought about my illness, I achieved what many deemed impossible: I healed myself.

My journey is detailed in my book, Starving the Wolf: A Victory Over Lupus, where I share the strategies and mindset shifts that led to my recovery.

Inspiring a New Way of Thinking

It's important to acknowledge that not everyone will experience the same outcomes, and that's okay. The goal is to empower you to take control of your health journey by shifting your perspective. Believe in your ability to influence your health, challenge limiting beliefs, and embrace a mindset of possibility and hope.

Your journey is unique, and while there are no guarantees, there is power in believing that change is possible. Shifting how you think about your illness opens the door to new possibilities for healing and a better quality of life.
